I have had a yahoo email account for as long as I can remember.  I think it was around 95 or so when I first got my account.  I got it because our college email system would not work outside of the classroom.  So I figured a web based email would be best, and I think yahoo was the first that I found.  When I read this article on how you could checkout the beta of yahoo mail I had to give it a try (Link here).

I really do like the way they have layed out the mail client.  They use a lot of AJAX to make the interaction really easy and enjoyable.  One aspect that I really like is the tabs.  When you send a message or read a message it can generate a tab instead of opening a new window, that is a great feature.  They did a good job of allowing interaction with foldering,  you can drag and drop your message into a folder.  When you do drage the message you can read the subject title and other info while you drag it.  An interesting feature is the preview.  Just like outlook or any other email client you can preview your message when it is highlighted.  I have not see this in a web based email system.

Overall, I think this new beta is great.  I use gmail for most email now (forward yahoo), but with this new interface I could be convinced to use yahoo more.

After verifying that my DSL connection was worth the savings of $27.01 per month, I decided to call comcast and cancel my cable modem.  Here is a recount of my call.  First, after all my years using comcast this was the fastest I ever got a person on the line (when I am canceling).  I finally get a guy on the line, and he is very interested in why I am canceling my service.  He asked if I was unhappy, and I answered truefully that I was not unhappy and did like the service.  He asked if the service was unreliable, and I told him that it had been very reliable.  He finally asked why I was canceling and I said that I was going to another provider.

His next question was interesting, he asked if I was leaving due to cost.  I then said that was correct and I was looking at saving some money.  At this point I was asked if I would be interested in a better offer?  Well of course I was, I love a deal.  His first offer was to reduce my 45 monthly amount by 5 dollars.  I said no.  He then goes on to discount the monthly amount by 10 dollars to 35 a month. I still say no.  I then get a great comment that DSL could never provide the same speed as Cable, I agreeded with him. And argued that there is no reason that I need bandwith capable of 5 MBS when I only really use 256 - 728 KBS (I love mrtg) I have mrtg traffic graphs from the last 4 years.   He could  not understand why I would not want a faster service, I responded that it was like owning a car that can go 200 mph and only being able to drive on the highways at 70 mph.  Why pay for a car that can go 200 when you only use it to go 55 or 70.

Even with VOIP I have not topped out my bandwidth or even got close to it.  Infact, most sites won’t give you content at 4 MBS.  Think of the bandwidth cost for those sites if they did.  The main thing that I need is upload speed, and my current DSL line actually has a better upload speed.   This is very helpfull with VOIP.  I have also noticed less latency with DSL.

Back to the Comcast guy, I finally get an offer from comcast for 27.99 a month for a slower service, with fewer features.  He then reminds me that comcast offers 12 email address, spam filtering, the “FAN”, and their software.  Which I retort with the fact that I don’t use their email, have never seen the “FAN” and would not install any software from an ISP ever.

This is where it gets interesting.  I finally tell them that I really would like to cancel my service (10 min into phone call).  He begins the cancel process, I then get asked if I would like to return my Modem or have a tech come out and get it. It will be a 13 dollar charge to have a tech come out.  I am not happy at this point, it will cost me 13 bucks to have someone come out and get a Motorola Surfboard Cable modem from 1999 that is worth about 5 bucks on ebay (I saw a ton of them for .99).  I can have the tech come or I can drop it off at a comcast billing location.  I ask what would happen if I just kept the junky modem.  That would cost me 50 dollars for the item. At this point I am doing math, I leased the modem for the last 6 years at 3.00 a month (36 yr), which is about 216 dollars that I have paid for this item.  I figure that paying for tech that is from ‘99 should cover or basis, well I am wrong.  I say “no thank you” for the tech and that I will drive to a station and pay.

15 min later I have cancelled my comcast high speed internet, become angry, and have to drive to a payment center to return a crappy out of date cable modem.  The saving of $324 per year is worth it, and I am really happy with my DSL.

I made the switch from Cable to DSL.  As a diehard Cable modem user for years, I think I had my current cable modem installed in 1999 with @home.  From Excite @home it went to ATT&T and now Comcast.  I have to say, that I have not had that much downtime in all those years.  That is until recently, when I started using VOIP more frequently.   Downtime was not my main reason for switching. I realized that a monthly bill from comcast that was over 90 bucks was too much money for what I needed.   I took a look and realized that I was paying 45.00 per month for internet access.  So I orderd DSL at 17.99 a month.  I am currently getting 1.5 down and 256-400 ish up.

I just did my bandwidth test and got 2.4 down and 417 up.  I recommend using speakeasy bandwidth tests for an accurate reading.

I have been thinking more about what would be the perfect laptop.  The current model I have (Dell Latitude D800) is very under par.  Not only is it too big and bulky, it is very inefficient to use.  I started to think of what would make the perfect development / work laptop.  One that can be used for business and travel, since I am a consultant.

The perfect laptop in my mind would have a thin small formfactor. I often think of the ibook hardware line or IBM thinkpad for the size comparison.  I would also have to have the following items:

  1. Powerful processor (duo core)
  2. Great battery life (at least 4 hours)
  3. 1-2 gig of ram
  4. Great resolution (don’t care so much about screen size, but rather resolution) 1400×1050 or greater
  5. TrackPoint (I hate the touchpad - read some previous blog posts)

Those are the major items.  The selection below is where a laptop would excel in my eyes.

  1. Build in wireless
  2. Build in Blue-tooth (for mouse, pds, phone, etc..)
  3. 4 usb ports (can’t live with just 2)
  4. S-video out (just because you never know)
  5. SD or CF card reader (this is very handy)

Here are some ideas that I have not seen or that are not very common:

  1. Built in FM / AM radio (great for when at a client site)
  2. Remote (for DVD and presentations)
  3. DVD viewing mode (I often use my laptop as a dvd player)
  4. Easy conversion for a second hard drive (Use of virtual pc images has made this a viable option)

Those are some of the key things that I would love to see in my next laptop.  As we move closer to Vista, I think the key items will be in the processor and video area.  However, I would like to see a more reliable and efficient laptop selection.

I have been working a lot with SQL 2005 recently.  I have to say that it is a fantastic upgrade from 2000.  However, there are a lot of areas of improvement.  Some of which are related to management and updates.  Overall, it is a great upgrade.  the tools are good, the reporting is awesome, the management is very gui and easy to use.   The down side is some simple tasks are more difficult.  An example is to export a table, you cannot just right click on the table and do tasks -> export / import, you have to do it at the root of the db.  Also, when selecting items - dts or jobs, you cannot do a select all you have to select each one.
These are probably items that will be addressed in the new Service Pack.
One interesting item that I just used was to find the version you have installed. YOu can run this script on all versions of SQL 2000/2005 to let you know what version you have.
SELECT @@VERSION
GO
 Here are the results
