Currently I am working at NuSoftsolutions and we are now building out a new practice called Kinetic IG (site coming soon). This practice is going to be focused on web presence and interactive applications. The main components will be graphic design, software development, and marketing fundamentals around web applications.

After a few hard drive failures and some data loss. You really begin to think about your data. In particular I really am worried about my digital photos.
I have told all my family members to make sure that they backup at least their photos. Unlike the old days of printed photo albums our new digital photos can be lost, hard drives fail.

There is a great article on T3 (link) about just that topic

For years you had a only one option for an OS on your computer, Windows. Well there have been some exceptions over the years (Unix, OS2, vax, etc..) but for your typical user it was just Windows. Machines ordered (dell, hp, etc…) all came with windows. This has changed in the last 3-4 years, people are starting to realize that there are other options. I don’t see windows going down in market share for a while, it’s hard to shift corporations from running a solid platform. But, I do see home users starting to make a shift away from Windows. This is due to a few factors:
1. Cost (Linux is free)
2. Useablity (MAC Leopard) is really easy to use and has a simple interface.
3. Performance (the new version of vista is a hog)

These factors may lead to a shift in how people select an OS.
I use a few different OS’s in my computing.
Linux - home secure server (SSH, vpn, file backup, all around tool box)
Vista - Laptop
XP - desktop (all around work horse machine)
OS10 - MAC

While writing this I came across this post for a MAC ad (VISTA)

I just watched national treasure again and realized how much I liked that movie - read about it on spout (National Treasure). While watching the film they were promoting the new National Treasure 2 (National treasure - Book of Secrets) I am actually excited to see this movie.

Since I have been using my Thinkpad more frequently at home for coding and any work while at home. I realized how much I love the Thinkpad trackpoint (red dot - eraser thing). What a great layout, I am much more efficient with that then the Dell version (Latitude D820).

To make switching easier I went out and purchased a new mouse for the Dell. I had been looking for another cordless one since my last cordless one ran out of batteries. It would go through them about every month. So I had gone back to a corded mouse. That is until I ran across a post on engadget about a new logitech Nano mouse for laptops. It had a very small usb element and could stay in the usb port while traveling.

So I purchased it. Logitech Nano VX By far the best mouse I have ever used.

After enjoying the Nano wireless mouse for my laptop I decided to purchase another logitech Mouse and Keyboard set for my desktop at home.

In the last 3 weeks I have gone to all wireless keyboard and mouse for all computers except for the trusty Thinkpad. I’m just going to have to keep a charge on my re-chargeable batteries.

At one time it was a featured download

I keep thinking of all the live CD’s I’ve used I like the Bart PE version the best. It is a familure windows view, runs all the windows tools (ad aware, search bot destroy, filerestore, perm delete).

I just can’t figure out why the other Live CD’s I’ve tried did not work as well. I know all the linux tools, I’ve probably tried 10 or so in the last 6 months. For many reasons, security auditing, disk rescue, disk erasing, and just for fun. None of the ones I tried were any use to me other than just a novel idea.

One day there will be an OS on a disk that I will really look forward to using.

Every day you hear of people using online tools, word processing, lists, etc… Well I figure I should share what I use.  My favorite items.

1. Tadalist - tadalist.com - I keep my daily todo up there to reference any where I am.  They give you a direct link username.tadalist.com

2. Google Docs - docs.google.com - I am not saying that this will replace MS word.  But it sure will allow  you to store that document you always use in a single place.  I have a expense sheet I keep - gas, food, etc. and I can update it anywhere I have a connection

3. reader.google.com - The easy way to read your feeds

4. Mail - yahoo.com / gmail.com - my two favorites

5. bookmarking - Google Bookmarks - easy simple and quick

This is just a small sample of what I use, but I find these are open the most often.

I currently use the Samsung Blackjack from ATT.  I really do like this phone but have a few issues with the technology.  For some reason Samsung decided not to use a standart USB plug to charge the phone, they have their own connector.   Also, they decided that you can’t charge the phone using usb power unless you are 1. hooked to a computer with activesync 2. the battery has some charge.  This is just stupid, I can’t use another computer or my car usb adaptor.

Currently I am at a point where I find my Blackjack a required item to take with me.  It works as a laptop when I can’t travel with mine.  It allows for internet access when in remote areas.   The only issue I am having is talk time and battery power.   The main item I am missing is WiFi.  So I hope that Att steps up or that I may find a t-mobile account more affordable.   I just saw the new blackjack 2 is on it’s way.  I hope they fix the issues http://www.samsungmobileusa.com/blackjackII/

Don’t think I’m going to purchase this one.  I’m not sure why someone would need another server in their home.  I like the idea but I think they are missing some features.  Why couldn’t I just use linux?  Or my old XP system to do the same thing.
