I installed google sync today (Google Sync)

I had been using Exchange for all my Mail, Contacts, and Calendars. So far it is working well. I was worried that I would lose all my contacts. I only had to back them up and move them to google contacts.

Now to see if life is easier with out Outlook?

Skype for the iPhone

Over on lifehacker.com I saw a rumor that Skype may be coming to the iphone. What a great day that would be. I love skype for the ease of use and how it can be used for forwarding phones. I use skype out when I am at my families cottage. The cell phone coverage at “the cottage” is pretty horrible. My phone does not work unless I walk up the road about 100 yards.

I have been able to provide wireless internet to the area cottagers so over the years I have been able to get around not having the cell phone work by forwarding calls to my skype number. If skype does go onto the iPhone I will be able to use the wifi with out using another device.

This may be one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. The web site internet archives see the link and look at your site.
(Wayback machine) – http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

The archive has 3 petabytes of data. It is housed in a Mobile Data center (Mobile data center) – http://www.sun.com/featured-articles/2009-0325/feature/index.jsp

They can scale by adding more containers. Each container is self contained with cooling, controls, and server racks.
”.. This archival database expands with the Internet, and so grows by nearly 100TBs every month.. ”

Netbook and the Cloud

I finally broke down and purchased a netbook. I ordered the MSI Wind. I found a killer deal on Amazon and could not pass it up.

I have followed the Wind for quite a while and have been amazed at how it has held up as one of the leading netbooks for over a year. I was really hoping to get a SSD (Solid State Drive) netbook but every model I priced out with at 10 inch screen broke my budget. In the running for my purchase was the Acer One 10 inch, HP 1035nr, and Samsung. Each of those would have set me back near 400 bucks. I ended up with shipping and extra RAM spending $302.

The Wind has a great following in forums and there are a lot of Hacks and Mods available. From overclocking (I think I will try this) to making it a touch screen (not interested) – Quick list of hacks

I am excited to get this in hand and setup the system into my sync. Currently I use Live Sync (formerly folder share) but I’ve been moving to Mesh to keep all files sync’d. I have a vacation coming up that I have been planning on getting a netbook for. Since we are traveling by plane and have limited luggage and kids (3 children) I did not want to take my laptop. I will have to post on how well a netbook can be used as a primary machine.

Online Website Tools (ads)

I typically use google webmaster tools to manage my sites. This includes things like search submission, keywords, and robots.txt. I recently got a partner email from Microsoft (the company I work for is a MS partner) and in that message was a link to Microsoft’s Tools Ad Labs. I did not know these even existed. I started playing with the location tool it is pretty interesting.

I would love to have some money and time to build out a great media center and home office.

Great Videos

I’m not a huge YouTube fan. I hate getting emails with links to youtube. However, I got a recommendation to listen to this video and I had to share.

It is a version of Bob Marley’s “One Love” song. Which is one of my favorite tunes. It was created by Playing For Change.

Also, a rendition of Stand By Me by the same group.

Great article on Lifehacker.com about failure. It shows that failure is not just a status you can place on things. In the case of the article, skills and knowledge was learned that will allow the author to succeed in the future

Updated My iPhone : Jailbreak 2.2.1

I don’t sync my iPhone that much and when I hooked it up to itunes yesterday I was due for the new firmware 2.2.1. I realized that since my phone was already Jailbroken (is that a word) I would have to Jailbreak it again.

Other than the 1.5 hour download for the update from apple the whole process took about 15 min. The only thing I did not anticipate is that most of my applications I had to re-install. I don’t think this is entirely due to jailbreak. Because, prior to putting jailbreak back on, my applications would start then just die. Applications like twitterphone and facebook.

I am going to have to see if there is a more efficient process to upgrade with out having to remove applications and then re-add them after an upgrade.

The one great thing from this, is that my phone is now running a lot faster. I’m not sure if that is due to the new firmware.
